From Concept to Comfort: Designing the BDI Bedroom

At BDI, form follows real life. We design around the way people actually use furniture—because a beautiful object that creates new problems isn’t particularly well designed.

When we turned our attention to the bedroom, we started with the questions most bedroom furniture tends to ignore. Where does the phone charge? How does the bed accommodate different mattress heights? What happens when you need a little light at 2 a.m.? And can storage be made safer without making it less useful? Those questions shaped LINQ and KAVA—two distinct bedroom collections designed from the inside out.

What makes a BDI bedroom different?

Designed around the details.

The best bedroom features are often the ones you stop noticing—because they simply work where and when you need them.

More than a bed.

LINQ and KAVA are available in Queen and King sizes, but the bed was only the starting point. Both collections extend into coordinated nightstands, dressers, chests, benches, and headboard cushions—each developed to solve a particular part of the bedroom routine.

Nightstands integrate power and storage close to the bed. Dressers and Chests combine full-extension drawers with built-in anti-tip mechanisms. Benches add seating and storage without feeling like an afterthought. And optional headboard cushions provide support for reading, working, or simply sitting up in bed.

The goal was not to create a matching suite. It was to create a room that works together.

It starts underneath the mattress.

A bed is only as good as what supports the mattress, so the platform became one of the most extensively tested parts of the collection. Our design and engineering teams built and evaluated dozens of prototypes, studying slat geometry, load capacity, airflow, flex, weight, installation, and noise.

The final system uses fabric-wrapped pine slats to reduce vibration and sound while creating a strong, breathable foundation. The slats roll for easier handling, install without tools, and secure in place once assembled.

The result? A custom-engineered fabric-wrapped pine slat system that minimizes vibration and sound, while supporting heavy mattresses with virtually no flex. 

Each set of slats rolls up for simple transport and tool-free assembly, then secures with Velcro for stability. 

Whether you're using a traditional or adjustable mattress, the platform provides a solid, breathable foundation.

Mattresses vary considerably in thickness, so a fixed platform can leave the finished bed higher—or lower—than expected. BDI beds provide four possible mattress positions and two sets of legs, for a total of six inches of vertical flexibility.

That range lets the bed adapt to the mattress rather than forcing the mattress to dictate the proportions of the bed. It also makes it easier to achieve a comfortable height for getting in and out of bed.

Tested beyond the obvious.

Strength mattered. So did noise, airflow, assembly, weight, and the way the platform feels in everyday use.

Nightstands that anticipate your needs.

Nightstands are often treated as an afterthought. We treated them as a bedside tool—studying where devices land, where cords go, and what you want within reach without having to sit up or lean over.

The nightstand top glides forward 12 inches, bringing a drink, book, or device closer while revealing a concealed power hub at the rear. The mechanism is derived from BDI's file-drawer engineering, allowing the top to support more than 50 lbs while moving smoothly.

Behind it are three AC outlets, USB-A and USB-C charging, plus cord wraps that keep excess cable under control. The 28" LINQ Nightstand, adds a shallow center pull-out tray for the smaller things that otherwise disappear into a bedside drawer.

Power, minus the clutter.

The hypothetical bedroom may be free of screens and charging cables. Real bedrooms aren’t. Phones, watches, lamps, and other devices tend to come with us, so we designed for that reality rather than pretending it doesn’t exist.

LINQ beds integrate AC outlets plus USB-A and USB-C charging on both sides of the headboard. KAVA beds provide discreet USB-C charging. Power is also built into the rear of the nightstands, where sliding the top forward provides easy access for lamps, phones, and other bedside devices.

The goal is not to add more technology to the bedroom. It is to give the technology already there a better place to live—keeping power close at hand and cables largely out of sight.

Illuminating design.

Integrated dimmable lighting casts a soft glow below the headboard—enough light to navigate the room without reaching for an overhead fixture.

Lighting that responds to you.

Bedroom lighting needs to do something overhead lighting rarely does well: provide useful illumination without filling the room with it.

Hidden LEDs beneath the headboard create a soft pool of light, controlled by a centered brass touch bar. Tap to turn the light on or off; touch and hold to adjust the brightness. The hardware remains discreet, and the light stays where it is useful.

Smarter storage. Safer by design.

Meeting current STURDY Act anti-tip requirements shaped the engineering of the six-drawer Dresser and five-drawer Chest. A concealed interlock allows only one drawer to open at a time, helping reduce the risk of tip-over without reducing usable storage.

The drawers extend 18 inches from the 20-inch-deep cabinet for easier access, while concealed steel reinforcement strengthens the leg structure without changing its visual profile.

The details that make bedroom furniture work better are not always the ones you notice first. They are the platform that adjusts to the mattress. The outlet where your hand expects it. The light that turns on without lighting the whole room. The drawer system designed to help keep a cabinet stable.

That is the thinking behind the BDI bedroom: start with how the furniture needs to work, then design outward from there.
