Changes in drinking preferences leading to rise of “home-tainment”

CHANTILLY, VA — December 2017 — Where is the best place to grab a drink after work or relax with a few friends? Consumer trends indicate the answer for an increasing amount of Americans is no further than the comfort of their own homes. According to wine app Vivino, 47 percent of Millennials and 61 percent of Generation X and Baby Boomers say they would rather drink from home than at a social gathering, bar, or winery.

The marketplace is feeling the impact of what experts are calling the rise of “home-tainment”. One in six U.S. neighborhood bars has closed, with closures at a peak of six per day in 2014. According to the Nightlife Association, approximately 6,500 U.S. nightclubs have also either cut back their hours or closed up shop within the first year of operation. This trend has also led to an increase in the number of “fast casual” restaurants, which offer happy hour customers the opportunity to grab a meal beyond typical bar food.

According to Lorri Kelley, President of BDI, this has meant furniture companies have had to rethink what they offer in terms of entertainment furniture for the home.

“At BDI, we saw this trend coming about five years ago and knew there was an opportunity to offer innovative designs for consumers embracing the “home-tainment” movement,” said Kelley. “Our home bar collections offer sophisticated, functional designs that can accommodate the needs of consumers looking to bring the party home, and create more of an entertainment hub in their own spaces.”

Perfect for the upcoming holidays, BDI has introduced two home bar designs, ideal for those looking to entertain this season.

As a stand-alone bar design, the Corridor Bar offers a rich, full-featured home bar. Boasting beautiful double louvered doors that open fully on 180 degree hinges, a durable, easy-to-clean surface and ample storage for everything from wine and spirits, to stemware / glasses and bar accessories, the Corridor Bar is the perfect addition to any entertaining room.

For a mobile entertainment option, the Verra Bar Cart is designed to serve up a host of storage and serving features. With satin etched durable glass surfaces, a stemware rack mounted under the storage drawer to keep stemware in place, removable stainless inserts for storing up to a dozen bottles of wine and spirits, and locking wheels, the Verra Bar Cart can move wherever the party may lead.

Both designs are available through finer home furnishings stores nationwide and internationally. To locate a BDI retailer, visit https://www.bduisa.com/retailers.
