Jason Huang, a furniture design specialist at ARTMAN, echoes this shift: “Designers are moving away from rigid symmetry, embracing fluid, organic forms that promote energy and motion.” This artistic, asymmetrical approach turns furniture into statement pieces, merging beauty with function.

Bree Steele, Interior Designer at RJ Living highlights this shift: “Sustainable materials such as reclaimed wood, recycled metals, and natural fibers like linen, rattan, and bamboo will play a big role in furniture design.” Designers are also exploring biodegradable and upcycled materials and hemp-based fabrics.

Nataliya Zhestkova, co-founder of sustainable product specialist Ecualama, underscores the significance of durable, eco-friendly materials: “Hybrid materials that combine durability with sustainability, like cork-infused composites and mushroom leather, will play a significant role in mainstream furniture.” This commitment to sustainability aligns with the rising demand for transparency and responsible production methods.

Creature Comforts

This year will see a continued emphasis on comfort and spaces that promote healing and calm. One way is through outdoors-focused interior design. “Expect more greenery-centric decor, such as terrariums and moss walls, fostering homeowners' connection to nature,” says Christina Giaquinto, Professional Organizer and Brand Ambassador of Modular Closets. Biomorphic designs inspired by organic shapes will also play a role in this.

In spaces where we truly yearn for relaxation, such as the bedroom, Giaquinto sees bed headboards as more than practical furniture—they will make a pronounced statement in 2025. “Since a headboard is a major focal point of any bedroom, they will be used more to influence a decorative aesthetic” while providing functional comfort.

Danielle Blundell, Executive Home Director of Apartment Therapy predicts a shift toward “more maximal, richer, moodier marbles and darker woods” that add depth and personality to interiors. As reported in Apartment Therapy’s 2025 State of Home Design Survey, consumers can expect to see a re-emergence of vivid blues, deep greens, and fiery reds, along with intricate patterns that infuse spaces with character.

Silvia Lupone, interior design expert and Owner of Stingray Villa sees personalization as a key factor: “People search for furniture that shows who they are on the inside. They want interiors that do not feel standard and mass-produced.” This trend fuels demand for unique, art-inspired furniture with unexpected material combinations, such as marble with brushed metal or wood with translucent acrylic.

With more people working and living in multifunctional spaces, adaptability is a priority in furniture design. “We expect sustainable and multifunctional furniture to take center stage in 2025,” says Luca Steinmetz, Founder of home renovation firm Farawayhomes in the UK. Desks that transform into tables, storage-integrated seating, and modular sofas that evolve with space constraints are increasingly sought-after solutions.

Michael Monette, Founder of Office Furniture Plus highlights the impact of hybrid work: “Hybrid work models will drive demand for modular furniture. Businesses want adaptable pieces that serve multiple purposes.” This trend extends to home offices, where ergonomic and space-saving designs are essential.

Demand for Versatility

"With evolving living spaces, there's an increased demand for furniture that serves multiple purposes, like coffee tables with built-in storage or adaptable dining tables," adds Bare.

Technology + Furniture

Technology is seamlessly merging with furniture design, enhancing convenience and connectivity. “Built-in wireless charging, integrated power outlets, and data ports will become standard,” says Monette. From voice-activated movable furniture to smart cabinetry with hidden charging stations, furniture is evolving to meet the digital age’s demands.

Josh Qian, COO of Best Online Cabinets, emphasizes digital fabrication’s impact: “Advancements in 3D printing and CNC machining will allow designers to produce complex forms that were previously impossible.” This innovation paves the way for highly personalized and futuristic designs.

A Fusion of Retro and Modern Styles

Nostalgia meets modernity in 2025, with retro-inspired pieces infused with contemporary elements. According to Pam Durkin, President at James Martin Vanities, we'll see a “resurgence of retro-informed styles, such as mid-century modern and art deco with a fresh twist.” Jason Huang adds that the retro-modern fusion will be reintroduced in the form of “sofas with ethnic prints and environmentally friendly materials like bamboo and recycled components that capture the vintage aesthetic while staying relevant.”

Also from Apartment Therapy’s 2025 report, Blundell adds that mid-century design is evolving a bit and becoming softer in color/form and more European in style. “The ‘Scandi’ aesthetic is also getting warmer in terms of color palette and materials,” she says, which points to white walls and lighter woods being warmed with hues of heathered plum, forest green and chocolate brown.
